| Abstract: The geochemical assessment of groundwater in Awa-Ilaporu, near Ago-Iwoye, southwestern Nigeria was carried out with the aim of studying the its physical and chemical parameters. The area is within the crystalline Basement Complex of southwestern Nigeria and it is predominantly underlain by banded gneiss, granite gneiss and intrusive pegmatite. 210 hand dug wells were sampled for their physical parameters: electrical conductivity (Ec), temperature, salinity, pH and total dissolved solid (TDS). 15 water samples from different wells were randomly collected for chemical analysis and analyzed using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS). The results of the physical analysis of water samples in this area conform within the permissible recommended limit values of the World Health Organization (WHO), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Standard Organization of Nigeria (SON) standards for drinking water and it revealed that the fresh and good for domestic and industrial usage. Hydrochemical analysis of major and trace elements revealed a mean concentration in the order of Na>K>Mg>Ca>Mn>Zn>Pb>Cd>Cu and the anions showed the order of concentration range of HCO3>PO4>NO3>SO-24. NO3 of two well locations (i.e. A3 and A6) had concentration above the WHO, EPA and SON standards due to anthropogenic activities in this area. The contamination factor, Geo-accumulation index and degree of contamination showed no contamination except for Ni which is moderately contaminated in the area. This study therefore showed that the groundwater in the area is fresh and good for domestic industrial and agricultural purposes. |
