| Abstract: The traditional method for developing mathematical models demands a level of theoretical knowledge from the model developer, before model formulation. In some cases, little or no theoretical knowledge is available, while in other cases the model developer seeks an improvement on an already existing model. This work shows how the idea of reverse engineering can be applied in the development of new models or improvement of existing models, by beginning with a Data-driven model to development of the theoretical bases for the process. A new model was developed for the prediction of saturation point for a carbon filter and an improved model for microbial growth, using the idea of reverse engineering. This new technique can be applied to improve existing models and develop new models for processes with little or no theoretical knowledge, thus shedding light on the theoretical bases of complicated processes. |
