| Abstract: The extraction of manganese (II) from aqueous solution using 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-butanoylpyrazol-5-one (HBPy) and 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-stearoylpyrazol-5-one (HSPy) in chloroform was studied as a function of extractant concentrations and pH. It was established that Mn (II) complex extracted is of composition, Mn(BPy)2 and Mn(SPy)2, showing that the metal to the ligands mole ratio is 1:2. The extractant equilibrium constants were log Kex = -0.36 and -0.69 for the HBPy and HSPy respectively, showing that the HBPy is a more effective extractant for Mn (II) than the HSPy. Again, the results show that the Mn (II) is quantitatively recovered from aqueous solution at higher acidity (lower pH). This shows that Mn (II) can quantitatively be extracted from aqueous solution by proper adjustment of the extractant concentrations and pH, thereby providing a clean method of purifying and concentrating the metal ion in the presence of other metallic ions for electrowinning. The correlation coefficient, r value of 0.41, shows that there is moderate positive relationship between using HBPy and HSPy in the extraction of Mn (II), hence both can be used as close substitutes in the process. |
