| Abstract: Maximum information on the performance of a production or experimental process can be obtained by employing statistical methods. Previous studies have shown that Nigeria is blessed with abundant bitumen resources that can be commonly and sustainably exploited to effectively and economically combat corrosion of steelworks. This analysis is an overall assessment from a statistical perspective, corrosion protection levels of four basic mechanical properties of the steel by various coatings of 0.81 to 1.46mm thicknesses of synthetic and natural bitumen samples got at some critical resource sites in the country through data that had been test-obtained from coat-protection levels of each property by the coatings in the studies. The analysis indicates that generally, the protection level by any bitumen of comparable quality with the samples will increase with coating thickness and be in close range for the same coating thickness and mechanical property. Bitumen of comparable quality with the sample from Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC) synthesized with Nigerian crude blended with Iran’s Basara crude as feedstock will protect all the properties up to 71.875% at the mean coating thickness of 1.12mm while comparables with the natural bitumen samples will protect all the properties up to 66.028% at the thickness. Protection of hardness corrosion deterioration of the steel by the bitumen coatings is highest followed in order by its tensile, impact, and fatigue strengths. The analysis provides comprehensive applicable information towards optimal sourcing of abundant bitumen from the country's resources for proper and economical corrosion protection of pipelines and other aspects of plants in the country's petroleum-dependent economy that is prone to costly corrosion ravages. |
