| Abstract: The physicochemical properties of the volatile oils from the aerial parts of Lantana camara, Hyptis suaveolens, and Cleome viscosa were determined. The oils were obtained using solvent extraction method. Percentage yield of oil showed the following; Lantana camara leaves, 3.79%; Hyptis suaveolens leaves, 3.17%; Cleome viscosa leaves, 2.70% and Cleome viscosa seeds, 3.0%. Saponification values were 210.36, 216.72, 175.44, 392.16 for L. camara, H. suaveolens, C. viscosa (leaf), C. viscosa (seeds) respectively. Acid values (%Free Fatty Acids) were 14 (7.042%), 18 (9.054%), 22 (11.066%) and 26 (13.078%), for L. camara, H. suaveolens, C. viscosa (leaf), C. viscosa (seeds) respectively. Ester values (% glycerin) were 196.36 (10.734%), 198.72 (10.863%), 149.44 (8.169%), and 370.16 (20.234%) for L. camara, H. suaveolens, C. viscosa (leaf), C. viscosa (seeds) respectively. Thin layer chromatography showed the presence of such compounds as ?-Ionone, Piperitone, and Citronellal. Conclusively, the presence of these compounds in the samples indicate that the samples could among other applications be used in development of aroma and flavors in food, cosmetics and other personal care products. This implies that these plants which have been generally considered as weeds may be exploited for beneficial purposes based on their chemistry. |
