Article Title: Optimization of Rock Slope Angles for Stability of Coal Mine Face in Okaba, Nigeria
by Akindele, O.B., Olaleye, B.M.

Abstract:
Okaba Coal mine slope stability was investigated to forestall effective mine operations and laboratory tests were carried out to determine the mechanical and dynamic properties of the rocks formation associated with the coal occurrence. The stability assessment of the rock slopes was carried out using finite element method with the determined geomechanical and dynamic properties of the rocks as input data. The simulation of the slopes was done with the use of RS2Rocscience software to derive models 1, 2 and 3for the slope geometries of the mine. Strength reduction factor (SRF) obtained from finite element analysis of the three models were 1.33, 1.24 and 1.29. The slopes were further optimized and gave an improved SRF value of 1.5 while the analyzed probability was found to be 0% probability of failure for the optimized slopes. This result will guarantee safety and efficient exploitation of the coal deposit.
