| Abstract: The aim of this paper is to determine, discuss and analyze the causes of vehicular traffic congestion centering on south-eastern Nigeria which results could be reflected to other parts of the country. This work was carried out in two phases. In phase one, a literature search and interview were carried out and 49 problems were identified. These problems were categorized as follows: Social/Public causes, Construction causes, Design causes, Governmental causes and Natural causes. In phase two, questionnaires were prepared and distributed to randomly selected FRSC staff, Contractors, and Consultants. At the end, returns were made as follows, 34 from FRSC STAFF, 30 from Contractors and 25 from Consultants giving a total of 89 questionnaires. The results from the surrey were analysed statistically using the severity index expression to determine the severity index (SI) of the problems identified and based on these indexes, the problems were ranked. Finally, the spearman's correlation coefficient formula was used to determine the degree of agreement between the parties. Based on the result of the analysis, it shows that there is strong agreement between the Federal Road Safety Corps members, the Contractors and the Consultants |
