| Abstract: The work reviewed the complex interrelationships between seismic wave characteristics, ground conditions, and structural damage. The characteristics examined include the wave type, velocity, acceleration, frequency contents and wave amplitude. The ground factors examined include the local geology, thickness and depth of the deposit, epicentral distance, topography, intensity and duration of ground shaking. The focal depth and the directivity of the fault rupture were shown to contribute significantly to structural damage. Some structures usually prone to damage by earthquake-induced phenomena include bridges, masonry buildings, chimneys, tall roofs, communication satellite masts as well as buildings with plan irregularities. The work showed that the performance of a structure during an earthquake is dependent on the epicentral distance and the site conditions |
