Article Title: Palm Kernel (Elaeis Guinensis) Oil Extracts Alleviate Symptoms Associated With Ovalbumin-Induced Rhinitis In Albino Rats

Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of palm kernel oil extracts (hot press palm kernel oil (HPPKO) and cold press palm kernel oil (CPPKO)) a traditional medicine used for treating nasal congestion on ovalbumin-induced (OVA) rhinitis in rats. Rhinitis was induced in the rats by intraperitoneal sensitization with 0.5ml of 0.12% OVA in 6% Al(OH)3 adjuvant for seven days followed by (1%w/v normal saline) ovalbumin challenge for four days. The physicochemical properties of the extracts were determined, Hematological analysis and lung histology were conducted. The results showed that HPPKO had significantly p<0.05 higher density, acid value, saponification, pH and peroxide value compared with the CPPKO. Scoring table for number of sneezing, showed a significant reduction in the number of sneezing in both HPPKO and CPPKO treated rats compared with untreated group. Hematological analysis revealed a significant p<0.05 reduction in the WBC of the OVA-induced untreated groups, while all the OVA challenged/sensitized groups had significantly p<0.05 higher platelet count compared with the control. Pre-treatment with HPPKO resulted in a significant p<0.05 increase in Hb, PCV, platelets and Neutrophils levels compared with all other groups. Histology results showed that CPPKO protected the lung tissues of the rats against inflammatory cell infiltrates, congestion, oedema and hemorrhages, while the lungs tissues of the HPPKO treated rats showed a mild infiltration of alveoli and interstitium. In conclusion intranasal application of the CPPKO significantly reduced symptoms associated with rhinitis in rats suggesting its efficacy as natural remedy for rhinitis, while the HPPKO may possess pro-inflammatory activities.
