Article Title: Using A Calculator As A Counter To Design A Linear Digital Measuring Wheel
by Tolufase E

Abstract:
The construction industry relies on time-to-deliver, in order to gain competitive advantage and increase profit margins, therefore, the industry needs equipment that will help it achieve this feat. This informed the design and construction of a linear digital device that measures distance speedily using low cost materials. Also, measurement plays a vital role in engineering, science and technology, hence, digital distance measuring wheel is an excellent device that provides fast and accurate measurement within the shortest possible time. In this study, the device was made using local materials. A circular object (wheel) of about one meter in circumference was used and a magnetic reed switch was attached at the wheel. As the wheel rotates, the reed switch disconnects from the magnet and reconnects after the wheel has made one revolution and thus a signal is generated by the reed switch and through connecting wires, sends the signal to a calculator which interprets this signal and displays it on its monitoring LCD screen. The distance measured by the device was calculated by the number of revolutions or circulations of the wheel multiplied by the circumference of the wheel and the figure is digitally displayed on the monitor of the calculator attached.
