| Abstract: Significant quantity of water for infiltration, percolation into the soil, runoff, stream flow, floods and erosion come from rainfall. This study focuses on detection of trends and periodicity in annual rainfall for five stations in the southwestern region of Nigeria. In this study, the trends in annual rainfall of each of the five stations for the time period of 1961 – 2014 were detected using the widely used modified Mann – Kendall test. The results of Mann – Kendall test statistic (S) which measures how strong the trend in rainfall is also indicates whether it is increasing or decreasing. According to the Mann – Kendall test, only Abeokuta of all the five stations indicates statistically increasing trend in annual rainfall. No trend in annual rainfall was detected for Ikeja, Oshodi, Ibadan and Ondo. Spectral analysis of the rainfall data revealed significant cyclical patterns (periodicities) in annual rainfall of south west Nigeria. The periodicities of annual rainfall of all the stations in the region range from 3.78 – 11.37 years with 3.78 – 9 years being the range of the strongest periodicities in annual rainfall in the region. |
