| Abstract: Electronic waste (e-waste) poses serious environmental and health threats, yet awareness within rural communities remains low. Electronic waste (e-waste) poses serious environmental and health threats due to the toxicity of its components. E-waste is a growing environmental and health concern, particularly in developing countries, where rural communities are often unaware of the risks. Most studies address awareness of the e-waste issue in urban settings but neglect rural communities. This qualitative study examines how curated internet images of e-waste influence rural women’s awareness, emotional engagement, and reflections on their responsibility. Through focus group discussions and photo elicitation interviews with rural women in South Africa, the study reveals that visual imagery evokes deep emotional reactions and critical thinking about personal roles in e-waste generation and management. The discussions and interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The findings suggest that images are a powerful, underutilized educational tool to foster eco-consciousness and stimulate dialogue in academic settings. |
