| Abstract: The advent of social media sites has influenced the way individual business owners and organizations conduct business, as they can now advertise and reach out to their consumers at a timely and cost efficient way on the platform while individual users could communicate and exchange information with friends in real time and keep up with the latest trends, news and gossip with little or no consideration for the risk and threats that they face. In most cases, lots of information are divulged freely and could be harvested and stored on the sites of the providers which could also pose serious security threats. Hence, organizations and individuals must do a lot in order not to lose their rights to privacy, damage their reputations and their data protection. This paper examines the security issues associated with the usage of social media networks in a developing country like Nigeria where the growth of users is on a raise with little or no knowledge of the threats and danger they exposes themselves to while using the medium and it proffers suggestions and possible solutions on how individuals and organizations could safely use the social media platform. |
