| Abstract: Modern medicine makes use of many plant-derived compounds as the basis for evidence-tested pharmaceutical drugs. The scientific information on the safety, efficacy and quality control of widely used medicinal plants such as Glyhea bevis; to facilitate the proper use of herbal medicines is essential. The pulverized leaves of Glyphea brevis was subjected to extraction with soxhlet and the ethanolic extracts of the leaves was screened for the presence of steroids, Alkaloids, Saponins, Tannins, Flavonoids, Terpenoids, Glycosides, using standard qualitative test procedures. Further analysis of the potent bioactive. Further analysis of the potent bioactive compounds in the ethanolic extract of the leaves was carried out using Gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GCMS).The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of Tannins, Terpenoids, Alkaloids and Flavanoids in the leaves extract. Among many compounds identified from the GC MS analysis were 2 (Hexyloxycarbonyl) benzoic acid; 1, 2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid, butyl octyl ester; Hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester; Phytol and 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid, ethyl ester. The obtained results indicated the presence of potent therapeutic compounds which have anti inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti eczema properties in the leaves extract. |
