| Abstract: Flavonoids are secondary constituents with a wide array of biological activities including: antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial and antitumour activities. Species of Vitexcostus-agnus (Verbenaceae) are monoecious, shrubby herbs and annual plants and their leaves, stems have long been used in food and ethnomedicine for the treatment of infectious diseases in Western Sudan. In this study the phenolics of the medicinally important plant were investigated. The leaves of Vitexcostus-agnus via using 95% ethanol. The phytochemical screening of the ethanolic extract of the leaves indicated the presence of flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and terpenoids. The crude extract was subjected to thin layer chromatography and column chromatography to give compounds I. The structure of Compound I was isolated from the ethanolic extract of Vitexcostus-agnusvia column and TLC experiments and the structurewas elucidated by some spectral methods (UV,IR,NMR and MS). __________________________________________________________________________________________ Keywords: isolation, characterization, dihydrochalcones, phenolics, vitexagnus-castus |
