| Abstract: In the last decade, the problem of light-weighting vehicles has become very important. The life span of an engine of a vehicle is subjected to its maintenance and the weight of the body it is meant to haul. In the future, because of stricter environmental rules, this aspect will be more significant. Consequently the automotive industry is forced to introduce more extensively lighter materials, but always in a cost control perspective, and perfect material combination with respect to welding. One of the most important aspects to consider is the weldability of these materials and their behaviour after welding. These are important information for the designers, in order to let them design the body parts, and make use of appropriate materials with the correct mechanical characteristics. Many metals have different kinds of welding properties that can affect their weldability, but at the same time, welding Engineers don't want to have a problem with their welding techniques, Some of those who weld don’t know how to deal with the weld ability of a metal. Therefore the materials that can be employed are highly considered and their welding techniques considered while the metals properties are the major selection criteria for good weldability. This work was carried out to develop a prototype expert system to help welding engineer properly weld a metal. Computer Aided Design Software was developed for welding of flat plates, another was developed for welding of cylindrical plates, and the results were compared, and finally, a software was developed for the Expert System for CAD welding. The set objectives were achieved, the rule-based approach was used to ensure that each step of welding procedure is properly adopted and model-based was used to predict the welding transformation product. The results showed the weldability of various metals. |
