| Abstract: A review of Hadfield's Steel which belongs to a high alloyed steel class is being presented in this paper. The history behind its development and its wide application in Russian Technology are well articulated. This steel is of interest because it has special characteristics which are a combination of hardness and toughness in one material. The compositions include mainly ferro-silicon and ferro-manganese melted in a basic electric arc furnace with pouring temperature of about 1450oC. The hardness value ranges between 200 and 220HB with impact toughness of 15kJ/mm2. The cast components include slot wedge, axle box, coupler yoke, hook and ring to mention but a few. It has some characteristics which distinguishes it from other grades of steel. Amongst which are wear resistance and toughness combine in one. This property makes it inevitable for this material to be exploited in rejuvenation of rail tracks system round the length and breadth of any nation which is interested in developing this mode of transportation |
