| Abstract: The activity level of the red cell enzymes; Glutathione-s-transferase, NADH ferricyanide reductase and serum lactate dehydrogenase where assessed in 40 patients homozygous for sickle cell anemia in southern Nigeria and compared with that of 40 normal HBAA controls as well as with 40 sickle cell carriers, the HBAS individuals. The enzymes activity was markedly higher in samples from the HBSS genotype individuals than those from the HBAS persons or HBAA controls. There was no significant difference between the activity levels in the HBAS and HBAA individuals. The result showed that enzyme activities were exhibited in the three genotype classes, but with variable activities in the order HBSS >HBAS>HBAA. |
