Article Title: Chemical Profile of an Anti-malarial Concoction "Udu" used in Umunchi Autonomous Community in Isiala Mbano L.G.A of Imo State, Nigeria
by Duru, Majesty, Amadi, Benjamin, Agomuo, Emmanuel and Eze, Adindu.

Abstract:
The chemical profile of "Udu", an anti-malarial concoction used in Umunchi autonomous community in Isiala Mbano L.G.A of Imo State, Nigeria was investigated. Results obtained revealed the presence of alkaloids (1.22+_0.03mg/100ml), flavonoids (1.48+_0.04mg/100ml), saponins (0.96+_0.01mg/100ml), tannin (1.05+_0.08mg/ml), cyanogenic glycosides (0.29+_0.12mg/100ml) and phytates (0.10+_ 0.00mg/100ml). Oxalates were not detected. Vitamin A (Retinol), vitamin B1(Thiamin), vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), vitamin B3 (Niacin), vitamin C (Ascorbic acid), vitamin E (Tocopherol) and important mineral elements like sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, iron, and manganese were detected in the studied concoction. Cadmium, lead and chromium were not present in the concoction. This study has shown the chemical profile of "Udu". These chemical constituents may be behind its medicinal property.
