| Abstract: The study was carried out with a view to analyze the physicochemical parameters and microbial content of rumen fluid obtained from cattle slaughtered at the University of Ibadan abattoir. After collection of the rumen fluid different physicochemical parameters (e.g. colour, odour, pH) were measured and microbial status was determined. The colours observed in this study ranged from brown to green. The odour recorded was aromatic (75%) and pungent (25%). This indicates normal condition and alkaline condition respectively. The pH of the rumen fluid ranged from 5.5-7.63. Total viable count ranged from 3.4 x 105 cfu/ml – 1.21 x 106 cfu/ml, while the population of fungi ranges between 2.0 x 104 cfu/ml and 3.7 x105 cfu/ml. Results obtained in this study showed that 75% of the cattle had a normal rumen fluid. Protozoa count reported ranged from 20000 protozoa/ml to 128000 protozoa/ml, which is within the normal range (1000000/ml) for rumenal protozoa in apparently healthy cattle. |
