Article Title: Analysis of the Treatment of Water Contaminated With Green Microalgae Using Polymeric Chitosan and Alum as Flocculants

Abstract:
This paper is focused on the analysis of the treatment of water contaminated with green microalgae using different flocculants. First, the algae inoculum was conditioned and cultivated in distilled water contained in several Pyrex culture bags for 21 days. The growth profile was monitored and found to correspond with standard growth curves for microbes for which the extensive and declining growth phases were evident at between 1st – 11th day and 16th – 21st day of cultivation respectively. The harvested microalgae samples (before and after flocculation) were subjected to microscopy test and imaging, in order to assess the effect of flocculants on the green microalgae cells. Polymeric chitosan and alum solutions were prepared as flocculants for treating the water contaminated with green microalgae. Optimum flocculation efficiency of the treated water was obtained at percentage turbidity removal of 96 % for both flocculants, which was at 10 mg/L for polymeric chitosan solution and 80 mg/L for alum solution. The pH of the flocculants also affected the percentage turbidity removal of the treated water, hence, both flocculants gave maximum flocculation efficiency at pH = 7. Physical assessment of the treated water using both flocculants showed water samples whose appearance were colourless, clear and transparent. Water treated with polymeric chitosan was also tasteless, while evidence of dissolved impurities in the water treated with alum solution imparted on it, mildly acidic and sour taste. Based on this study, polymeric chitosan is a preferred flocculant when compared to alum because water treated with polymeric chitosan is safer for human consumption.
