| Abstract: Automobile Brake linings material usually is made with asbestos. It is now generally known that during practical use, asbestos releases hazardous gases which can cause damages to human health and this is not desirable, which led to search for more human friendly materials. Asbestos-free brake lining was developed in this work using periwinkle shell and cow horn with epoxy resin as the based material. This was with a view to exploiting these agro fillers which are environmental and human friendly but are largely discarded as waste materials to replace asbestos which poses health hazard. Samples of brake pads linings were produced (Sample A-E) using particle size of 250?m by compressive moulding using different CHPS (filler) loading. The physical, mechanical properties and tribological properties of produced brake lining samples were studied. The results obtained showed that proper bonding was achieved as the percentage by weight of epoxy resin increased and percentage by weight CHPS decreased. The compressive strength, hardness, abrasion resistance, coefficient of friction, density, water and oil absorption and wear rate of the brake linings were determined and compared with existing brake lining properties. The result obtained indicates that CHPS can be used for automobile brake pad lining as replacement for asbestos. |
