by S. S. Daodu and D. N. Idehen

Abstract:
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system is an effective management system for organizations that can lead to excellent planning, significant improvement in services and productivity and improved sustainability resource performance such as much higher inventory turnouts, and greater reduction in managerial costs. This paper shows that adopting an ERP system has visible benefits in the area of business integration, reduce operational cost, business flexibility amongst others.ERP is not only about the software, it is much more concerned about principles; beliefs and the way an organization has done things for many years. However, implementing the ERP successfully in any organization depends on the readiness and practical involvement of all stake holders in the organization. The purpose of this work is to design and implement an improved ERP system which will show the benefits of deploying an ERP system in a University Environment, and in particular the University of Benin. This will make the various department fully automated. We utilized a detailed Readiness Assessment (RA) Model to answer two fundamental questions, namely (i) what is the university’s current ERP capability? and (ii) What changes are required before embarking on an ERP initiative? We developed a system that integrates some of the major business units in the university (using the java technologies and Oracle Database Express Edition) to illustrate the benefits of deploying an ERP system in a University Environment. The work has exposed the fact that ERP is characterized with integration of automated processes, whereas, other centralized applications are concerned with automating processes. __________________________________________________________________________________________ Keywords:
