| Abstract: A survey was conducted on socio-economic characteristics of goat fattening operation in Nine Local Government Areas of Bauchi State in 2016. A total of 270 respondents with 30 per Local Government Area were randomly selected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the results indicated that most of the farmers were male (93.58%) and fell within the age of 31-40 years (49.64%). The educational qualifications of the respondents revealed that majority of goat fatteners had Qur’anic education (60.13%) while (13.11%) attended tertiary education. Most of the farmers had small family income of N10,000 - N40,000 per month (61.56%) with small scale of operations of 1-5 animals (48.61%). Farmers that fattened large number of animals had small number (7.18%). The survey recorded problems affecting goat fatteners which includes mortality (12.00%) and high cost of feeds, especially during the off season (40.00%), disease and pest incidences (20.00%), inadequate capital (35.00%) accompanied by poor access to loan (93.31%). It was shown that transportation; inadequate extension services and poor pricing policies were among the constraints on goats fattening in the area. On the other hand, security problems was also found among the militating factors of goats fattening this was attributed to problems of the unrest affecting north eastern part of the country which was part of the study area. |
