| Abstract: The study examined the socio-economic factors affecting sesame (Sesamumindicum L)production in Mubi Region of Adamawa State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socioeconomic characteristics of sesame farmersand determine factors affecting the technicalinefficiencies of farmers in sesame production in the study. Data were collected from 100 randomly selected sesame farmers in two local government areas of the region with the aid of structured questionnaires. Data analyses were carried out using descriptive statistics involving the use of frequency distribution and percentages, and inferential statistics involving the use of stochastic frontier production. The result revealed that female farmers constituted majority (68%) of the producers, married with a mean age of 39 years. Most of them (78%) had no formal education. The respondents were mostly small scale farmers, and they cultivated an average of about two hectares of farm land using personal savings. The result of the stochastic frontier production function analysis shows that the variance parameters, that is the sigma squared 0.413 (?2) and the gamma 0.799 (?) were statistically significant at 1% level of sesame production. The coefficient of family size, farming experience, education and extension visit is estimated to be negative and statistically significant at 1% level. Based on the findings of this research, the study recommend among others that farmers should be educated through effective extension programmes that will educate farmers on the potential of sesame production. |
