Article Title: Effectiveness of Moringa Seed and Banana Peel in the Purification of Surface Water
by Jeje J.O, Kolapo, R. A and Adeleye, T. M

Abstract:
This study investigated the effects of moringa seeds and banana peels on the physicochemical parameters of surface water purification.Water quality parameters such as; acidity, alkalinity, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and total solids (TS), of water samples were determined for raw and treated water. Moringa seeds and banana peels solutions (0.5%, 1% and 1.5%) were added to the water samples and mixed rapidly for 60 seconds and then slowly for 2 minutes. Comparing the results of both moringa seed and banana peels and taking 0.5% as the most effective dosage, all parameters conformed to WHO standards. Moringa seeds was more effective in the reduction of the acidity (62.7%), TDS (45.1%), TS (37.9%), and turbidity (71.4%) before filtration. While banana peel was more effective in the reduction of TSS (79.3%) before filtration; TSS (93.1%), and TDS (60.8%) after filtration. The reduction of the turbidity (89.7%) and TS (24.1%) in stage 2 was the same for both moringa seeds and banana peels. Based on these results, moringa seeds can be claimed to be more effective coupled by the fact that banana peels added yellow coloration to the water.
