Article Title: The Effect of Pump Speed on the Pressure Heads of a Single-acting Reciprocating Pump with a Transparent Cylinder Assembly
by Ekong, Godwin I.

Abstract:
This paper presents the effect of pump speed on the pressure heads of a single-acting reciprocating pump with a transparent cylinder assembly for use in the Mechanical Engineering laboratory of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Akwa Ibom State. The analysis demonstrates the variation of pump speed with pressure heads during suction and delivery strokes. A transparent piston-cylinder assembly is incorporated into this apparatus to aid in the visual understanding of the working principle of the positive displacement pump during the suction and delivery stroke per each cycle of the pumping mechanism. The design parameters are a piston diameter of 0.100 m, a stroke length of 0.305 m, an operating designed speed of 20 r.p.m, a suction head of 0.762 m, and a delivery head of 1.585 m. The length of the suction pipe is 1.219 m and the length of the delivery pipe is 1.829 m. The reciprocating pump principles were applied for the pressure heads analysis during the suction and delivery strokes, resulting in a discharge of 0.0008m3/sec. Further parametric studies for four different pump speeds were carried out to ascertain the effect of speeds on the pressure heads during the suction and delivery strokes. Validation of the pressure heads during delivery stroke was carried out against Rajput's analyses to ascertain the accuracy of the design and the results were in good agreement.
