| Abstract: A detailed study of private participation in solid waste management in Nigerian cities taking Ibadan South West Local Government Area as a case study was conducted. The purpose of the study is to build a sustainable solid waste management in Nigeria urban areas through private sector participation. The study identified various types of waste generated by the residents, their methods of waste disposal and efficiency of private firms? participation in waste management in different parts of the study area. The study employs questionnaire as instrument of data collection while descriptive statistics was used to analyse the data collected. The result shows that 28% and 20.4% of the residents generated leaves and waterproof bag used in wrapping food respectively. The study also shows that majority of the residents in high density zones are using unhygienic means for the storage of their waste compared to what is operating in the medium and low densities zones in the study area. Result of the analysis also shows that the population enjoying private firm participation is comparatively smaller than those disposing their waste in unauthorised places and are mostly found in medium and low density zones. Among problems facing private firms that are managing waste in Ibadan South West are finance, conveyance, charges among others. Suggestions put forward by residents include enlightenment campaign, enforcement and adequate funding among others as possible solutions to the problems identified. |
