| Abstract: This study examined the issue of secondary school students' attrition in geography in Esan West Local Government Area, Edo State, Nigeria. Data were obtained from relevant government bodies and field survey (through the administration of structured questionnaire) and analysed descriptively. The results showed that student's interest in geography as a subject of study is generally high and consequently not a factor in its attrition. However inadequate teachers and lack of requisite teaching facilities/aids is a major factor that translates into poor teaching of the subject and by implication students' unwillingness to offer it. The study further revealed that although the scope of geography syllabus is generally acceptable, there could indeed be a need to reduce it. Parental influence on future career choices of students and consequently the selection of subjects to offer was found to be high. The study recommends for the training of geography teaches in required quantity and quality; emplacement of capacity building programmes; provision of adequate teaching facilities/aids; review of the subject curriculum and guidance and counselling of students on geography related career opportunities. |
