by Dr. Mohammed Al Sobaihi

Abstract:
This paper investigates learning receptive English skills (i.e reading and listening) . Specifically, it critically examines the research on the field of cognitive and metacognitive strategies in learning reading and listening of English language. The main goal lies in how these strategies play a central role in learning these receptive skills by the EFL students. In the FEL context, thorough review of main studies has been conducted to unveil the extent at which learners of English attain benefits in reading and listening by using the strategies. It signifies the benchmarking of cognitive and metacognitive strategies in the field. The results indicate that cognitive and metacognitive strategies attain learning reading and listening as both instructional and pedagogical. The study concludes by calling for considering the cognitive and metacognitive strategies in designing future EFL programs, textbooks, online examinations and the applications of learning English, as well as in the courses of training EFL instructors.
