by Dr. Esmat Ara and Tamanna Jahan Tanni

Abstract:
Old age allowances program is the oldest social security programs of Bangladesh started in 1997-’98 to eradicate poverty and improve the socio-economic conditions of ultra-poor older peoples. This purpose of this study is to find out the improvement in quality of life of elderly through old allowances program in Bangladesh. The study also attempts to find out the problems faced by the recipients of old age allowances. The research is based on primary sources as well as secondary sources for data collection. Both quantitative and qualitative approach has been used to conduct the study. The improvement level in quality of life of elderly peoples through old age allowances program has been identified by surveying on the beneficiaries with a short questionnaire of open-ended and close-ended questions along with an interview schedule. Ninety sample from the service recipients of old age allowance has been taken by using systematic sampling method. The study findings reveal that quality on two aspects called social status and psychological well-being has increased for most of the respondents, but quality on basic needs does not meet yet. This study findings would be a pathfinder for the concerned authority to overcome the challenges and systematic problems of old age allowance for improving the quality of life of elderly people in Bangladesh.
