Article Title: An Evaluation of the Curriculum for Primary Six Pupils with Hearing Impairment in Osun and Oyo States, Nigeria
by Osunjimi Stella Oluwakemi

Abstract:
Evaluation of curriculum of pupils with hearing impairment is a neglected field in research discourse and it has remained a largely unexplored frontier. The consequence is the continuous exposure of pupils with hearing impairment to irrelevant curriculum that has little or no bearing on their educational development. This study was therefore designed to examine evaluation of curriculum for pupils with hearing impairment in Osun and Oyo States of Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used to select ten special schools in the selected states. All head teachers and primary six class teachers in all the selected schools for the study were used. Twenty participants were used for the study. Three research questions were raised and answered. Three research instruments were used. Data were analyzed using frequency count, percentage and mean and standard deviation. The findings revealed that curriculum currently in use for learners with hearing impairment is deficient and inappropriate to meet their educational needs since it is based on the general education curriculum. It was observed in the results of the analysis that eighteen responded (90%) believed that curriculum should incorporate speech reading and total communication while seventeen respondents (85%) wanted communication skills to be incorporated into the curriculum. Seventeen (85%) respondents also believed that technological education should be added to the curriculum. It is concluded that an expanded core curriculum that incorporates additional contents like speech-reading, total communication, communication skills and technological education will best suit the interest and needs of learners with hearing impairment and it is therefore recommended for inclusion in the curriculum specifically meant for them
