| Abstract: The home irrespective of culture is considered very important in the growth and development of a child. More importantly for the child to fully integrate into the world around; there is need to use language, either verbal or non-verbal. However, current trends in many homes in Southwestern Nigeria show that parents prefer their wards to communicate using English language instead of the mother-tongue. The mother-tongue in this area is mostly Yoruba language. The parents’ choice of language automatically influences the home language. Consequently, the proficiency of the child in the mother tongue which is supposed to serve as the bridge of integration for the child in the immediate environment is low. The continual gap of children’s lack of proficiency in the mother tongue therefore becomes a burgeoning issue that this paper is aimed at addressing considering the importance of having sustainable strategies like family literacy and scaffolding that will facilitate teaching and learning in the home. This way, the child is being prepared for sustainable education that will rescue him/her from the dearth of language proficiency in Yoruba language. |
