| Abstract: The progressives share the view that there should be a relationship between what learners learn and what operates outside the school (society). Through this, transfer of knowledge takes place and the products of the school system find their place in the society. This situation seems not to be the case in Nigerian schools as many children who successfully pass through the schools find it difficult to fit into the world of work as well as to participate fully in finding solutions to the challenges of their society. Since Nigeria accepted education as an instrument of growth and development, her schools therefore, need to retool for sustainability of both the educational system, her products and the Nigerian society. Challenging socio- cultural situations such as religious, ethnic, economic and psychological issues are assuming disaster dimensions and jeopardizing sustainable national development and survival. This paper examines how utilizing the thoughts of Progressivists can redress Nigerian societal issues through her education system and made recommendations that include thematic curricular arrangements that cut across cognitive, affective and psychomotor development of learners. |
