| Abstract: The research was designed to investigate the Impact of domestic violence on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey research design was used for the study. The population for the study comprised all the 983 public primary school teachers in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State. A sample of 260 primary school teachers was selected for the study using simple random sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a 31items structured questionnaire develop my the researcher titled “Impact of Domestic Violence on Pupils Academic Performance Questionnaire (IDVPAPQ) . The reliability of the instrument was established using Cronbach Alpha method which yielded an overall reliability coefficient of 0.83. The data collected in relation to the research questions was analyzed using the descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. The study found out that all the forms of domestic violence such as physical, sexual, psychological and economic abuse has effects on the academic performance of primary school pupils in Awka South Local Government Area. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Federal Government and Non-Governmental agencies should create awareness campaign exercise to discourage parents from leasing out their children for housekeeping, prostitution, early marriage, or any other reason for money making. Also, Government should make sure that perpetrators of domestic violence are punished according to the law enacted for offenders and used as examples for others. |
