Article Title: Gifted Students' Perceptions on Basic Astronomy Concepts

Abstract:
In order for the human beings to perceive themselves and the events taking place around them, they must perceive the universe first. Understanding and interpreting the functioning of the universe is the purpose of astronomy, which is in one another with all sciences. For this purpose the aim in this study is to determine the perceptions of gifted students on the basic concepts of astronomy. The phenomenological method, which is one of the quantitative research designs aiming to reveal the perceptions of people on a certain concept or phenomenon, has been used in the study. An interview form which is semi-structured with 14 open-ended questions has been used in the study. The interviews were made with 4 gifted students who have been diagnosed with being gifted and who are attending to Bilsem (Center of Science and Art). In the analysis of the data, the descriptive analysis has been performed in the study by using pre-determined categories. The results revealed that gifted students have a perception at “Understanding Category” on basic concepts of astronomy at a rate of 78%; and also revealed that they did not have perceptions on “Not Understanding Level”. Furthermore, it has been observed that gifted students have upper level thinking skills like analytical, hypothetical and associative skills. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Keywords:
