| Abstract: This study examines how intrinsic motivation determines job satisfaction among the teaching and non-teaching staff in the polytechnics in Nigeria. It adopted survey which falls under the heading of communication approach as the research design. Questionnaire which was the data collection instrument used contained a 5-point. Likert rating scale to measure the determinants of job satisfaction responses. Out of the 1,300 copies of the administered questionnaire to the teaching and non-teaching staff of Yaba College of Technology, 1,200 copies were returned and properly completed. A response rate of 92.3% was recorded. Variables like job involvement, organizational commitment, turnover, absenteeism, perceived stress, job performance, productivity, life satisfaction, mental and motivation are correlates of job satisfaction. The greatest advantage of the survey is its versatility and its several advantages as a primary data collection approach. In the discussion of findings, the divergent views of both teaching and non-teaching staff of the polytechnics in Nigeria concerning the subjects of this paper were discussed. Such views were reflected on the educational level of both teaching and non-teaching staff; the relationship between intrinsic motivation attached to jobs that determine the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of teaching or non-teaching staff; the turnover of teaching and non-teaching staff, the influence of male and female gender on job satisfaction; the difference in satisfaction between teaching and non-teaching staff, the strength of intrinsic motivation over teaching and non-teaching staff and finally, the difference between teaching and non-teaching staff concerning the effect of salary on intrinsic motivation. |
