| Abstract: This study examined the teachers’ task in producing excellent students in an ideal science classroom in Ekiti- State. It investigated science teachers’ input in check-mating poor academic performance of students in science subjects. Survey research design was employed. The population for the study was made up all students in Ado local government public secondary schools in Ekiti-State, Nigeria. The sample consisted of 100 students randomly selected from four secondary schools in Ado-Ekiti using simple random sampling technique. An instrument used for data collection was a Standardised Comprehensive Science Test (SCST) comprising Physics, Chemistry and Biology test items. Data collected were analysed using mean, standard deviation, t-test and chi-square statistics. The hypotheses postulated were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that, teachers’ task and competency has a significant effect on students’ performance in science subjects. It is therefore recommended that government should increase the funding of education sector. However, teachers should be well groomed and prepared before engaging in teaching science subjects. |
