Abstract:
Education is the total process of developing the mind to function properly in the society. As a part of human endeavour, it has witnessed tremendous revolution through innovation brought about by the use of technology in teaching and learning.Emerging technology has provided mirage of opportunities for teachers and students to harness, complement and support teaching and learning process hence, there is a paradigm shift in the way teachers teach and students learn. It is therefore imperative for teachers of Vocational and Technical Education to be technology compliant to be able to explore the benefits to equip students with skills that enhances their self-reliance and develops effective and efficient human resources for sustainable national development. This paper examines the usefulness of emerging technologies in enhancing students’ performance in Vocational and Technical Education for National Sustainable Development. The study was a descriptive design of the survey type. The sample was made up of 300 secondary school teachers selected through multistage sampling technique. A structured questionnaire with 15 items was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by experts in the field while the reliability yielded coefficient of 0.85. The data collected were analysed using simple percentages mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that teachers were aware of the effectiveness of technology tools and their benefits in enhancing students’ performance and teaching and learning but most of the teachers lacked the technical know-how of the use, hence they were not fully utilised. It was therefore recommended that onshore and off shore conferences and workshops should be organised for teachers to train them on the use of technology tools in teaching and learning process.
