| Abstract: This study aimed to assess the utilization of teachers within the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme in Bayelsa State. A descriptive survey research design was employed, involving 267 Head Teachers selected from a total population of 534 in UBE schools across the state. Five research questions guided the investigation. Data were gathered through a self-developed Teacher Utilization Evaluation Questionnaire, which was validated by experts in the Department. The findings revealed a significant shortage of teachers in UBE schools, resulting in the overutilization of the few available ones. Furthermore, many teachers did not meet the minimum teaching qualification requirements, and there was a critical deficit of science and vocational subject teachers. Based on these findings, the study recommended that the government recruit adequate teachers across all subject areas to support the UBE programme. Given that basic education forms the foundation of the educational system both in the state and the country, regular in-service training and seminars are also recommended to enhance teachers’ pedagogical skills. |
