| Abstract: The paper examined how revitalization of agriculture can facilitate economic growth and, by implication, achieve sustainable development in Nigeria. The study used literature review/secondary data and it found that while Nigeria has neglected agriculture in favour of petroleum as a mainstay of the national economy from the 1960s to date, the relevance of agriculture to human existence can never be downplayed by any economic resource. This is why the country is presently in economic recession and other macro economic problems, such as inflation, high rate of poverty, devaluation Naira currency in the foreign exchange (rate) and unemployment are on the increase. The study therefore concluded that Nigeria’s development hinges on revitalization of agriculture which will hopefully perform better in enhancing sustainable development. This is because agriculture is not only a source of food and fibre but also catalyst for industrial development because it provides for raw materials, satisfies internal markets and promotes export earnings. The paper concluded that to diversify the Nigerian economy, the agricultural sector has to be revitalised by giving the sector a deserved attention. There shall also be adequate support for small scale farmers, and modernising the overall agricultural practices for both small-scale and large-scale farmers in Nigeria. |
