| Abstract: This paper x-rayed the learner-centered approach to teaching and learning for independent living which Nigerian schools is yet to fully realize because of some identified obstacles such as teachers factors, learners factors, learning material factors etc. This paper revealed that learners & trainers are not engaged in a serious reflection and discussion about what they are learning, neither are they being challenged to think and demonstrate how they would use different methods to respond to particular needs in the future classes and thereby discouraging sustainability. Since successful learners overtime can create link and use meaningful coherent representations of knowledge (strategies) to achieve learning goals and to help trainees respond positively (motivated) so as to gain values and attitudes, and life skills for school administrators to meet set goals that can enhance sustainability. It was the submission of this paper that regardless of the benefits of the learner-centered teaching, many teachers are still adamant to the teacher-centered teaching approaches, probably because of the lack of necessary knowledge and motivation that suit the practice of learner-centered teaching and learning and so on. This paper therefore suggests that the government should employ qualified school teachers who have the necessary language, content in pedagogical skills, with special reference to the use of learner-centered teaching methods. |
