| Abstract: This study investigated the extent to which research and development (R&D) opportunities and participation in professional development programmes predict teachers’ job performance in selected secondary schools in Bayelsa and Rivers States. The study adopted a correlational design, with a sample of 320 teachers drawn from selected secondary schools across the two states. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed through simple regression analysis to determine the predictive relationships. The reliability of the instrument was confirmed using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Findings revealed that access to research opportunities significantly predicts teachers’ job performance, accounting for 21% of the variance, while participation in professional development programmes also significantly predicts performance, explaining 10.2% of the variance. The study concluded that both variables are crucial for enhancing teachers’ effectiveness and recommended that educational stakeholders increase support for research engagement and tailor professional development activities to teachers’ needs. |
