| Abstract: This study explores the influence of career guidance on youth employability and its role in fostering economic development in Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Using a descriptive survey research design, the study aimed to achieve three objectives: assessing the availability and accessibility of career guidance services for youths, examining the impact of career guidance on youth employability, and evaluating how improved employability contributes to economic growth in the region. The study population included all career counselors, educators, and both employed and unemployed youths from various local government areas in Bayelsa State, with a sample of 360 respondents selected through stratified random sampling. Data were gathered via a structured questionnaire, the “Career Guidance and Youth Employability Questionnaire (CGYEQ),” which was validated by experts and had a reliability coefficient of 0.88 as determined by the Cronbach Alpha Formula. Data analysis utilized mean and standard deviation to address the research questions. The findings indicated that career guidance significantly improves youth employability in Bayelsa State, positively influencing local economic development. However, challenges such as inadequate career counseling infrastructure, a shortage of trained counselors, and weak integration of career guidance in the education system were identified. The study recommends the establishment of structured career guidance programs in schools, professional development for career counselors, and the implementation of policies that support youth career development at the state level. |
