Article Title: Determinants Of Recreational Sports Participation Among Adults In Urban And Semi-Urban Communities
by Adata Dickson Diepiribo (Ph.D)

Abstract:
This study examined the determinants of recreational sports participation among adults in urban and semi-urban communities. Guided by two objectives, the study sought to assess the perceived benefits of recreational sports participation on the physical and mental well-being of adults and to determine the extent to which socioeconomic, environmental, and personal factors influence participation. The study employed a descriptive survey design, with a population comprising adults engaged in recreational sports and program coordinators across selected urban and semi-urban communities. A sample of 400 respondents was selected using proportionate stratified sampling. Data were collected using a validated instrument titled the Determinants of Recreational Sports Participation Questionnaire (DRSPQ), with a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability coefficient of 0.86. Mean, standard deviation, and independent sample t-test were used to analyze the research questions and test the hypotheses. The findings revealed that adults perceive the benefits of recreational sports on physical and mental well-being to a low extent, with urban adults reporting slightly higher perceived benefits than semi-urban adults. Conversely, socioeconomic, environmental, and personal factors were found to strongly influence participation, with no significant difference between urban and semi-urban respondents. The study concludes that enhancing participation and awareness of the benefits of recreational sports requires improved facilities, structured community programs, and awareness campaigns. It was recommended that Governments and community planners should improve the availability and accessibility of recreational sports facilities in both urban and semi-urban communities to encourage greater adult participation.
